About Us
Our History
Like many towns across eastern North Carolina, Four Oaks owes its beginnings to the expansion of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. As the railroad pushed through the region, it selected this site as a supply depot for construction materials—thanks in part to a distinctive and easily recognizable landmark just off the rail line.
That landmark was a remarkable oak tree with four trunks rising from a single base. Known simply as the “four oaks,” it became a natural point of reference for railroad workers and suppliers alike, ultimately giving the town its name.
Local legend adds a colorful twist to the story. It is said that a hunter once chased an opossum up a young oak sapling. Determined to claim his prize, he cut the tree down. From the remaining stump, four shoots emerged, growing over time into four strong trunks—creating the unique tree that would define the community. As Paul Harvey might say, that’s “the rest of the story.”
Today, Four Oaks continues to honor its rich heritage. The Four Oaks Commercial District, recognized for its historical and architectural significance, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006—preserving the town’s story for generations to come.
